Leicester Winter Night Shelter is a multi-faith night shelter that rotates around 7 venues in the city. Open from 4th December 2017 to 25th February 2018. The shelter provides emergency accommodation and food to homeless people in Leicester during the coldest months of the year. The central coordination and finances are managed by One Roof Leicester, an independent registered charity with the aim of empowering local communities to support homeless people to build new lives.
We're also supported by Housing Justice, who run the national quality mark for winter shelters.
During the winter of 2016/17 we ran the first mutli-faith night shelter in the country. We inspired 8 faith groups and denominations to provide either a venue or a hot meal. Over 250 volunteers gave up their time to provide hospitatlity and friendship to the guests. During these 11 weeks we welcomed 24 guests at the shelter. This winter we want to build on what we offered last year by opening for longer and encouraging more individuals and groups to become involved.
Due to the sharp rise in rough sleeping ORL will continue to work with faith groups across Leicester to run a night shelter that rotates around seven places of worship, with volunteers offering food and companionship for 10 rough sleepers.
We aim to provide emergency accommodation and food to homeless people in Leicester; offering hospitality without discrimination.
- We aim to provide a safe space; to rest, to reflect, to listen.
- We aim to take their lead; in terms of their own felt physical, social and spiritual needs.
- We aim to offer support in signposting which is personalised.
Leicester Winter Night Shelter is run by volunteers at venues around Leicester. Volunteers are mostly local but are of all ages, faiths and backgrounds.
We need new volunteers to help make the shelter a success. Our volunteers, working in three shifts, provide evening meals and friendship, night time supervision and breakfast.
